Careers Roadmap: Year 7–11

Year 11 – Planning Next Steps

Focus: Transition
Students receive targeted support to make confident decisions about education, training, or employment after school.

Key Activities:

  • One-to-one guidance interviews
  • Post-16 application support
  • Apprenticeship and college workshops
  • Interview preparation
  • Final careers events and employer encounters
  • Transition planning with families and advisers

By the end of Year 11, students will have:

  • Explored a wide range of careers and sectors
  • Met employers, visited workplaces, and taken part in challenge activities
  • Completed work experience
  • Developed a strong CV and interview skills
  • Received personalised guidance
  • Understood the full range of post-16 pathways
  • Built confidence, ambition, and readiness for their next steps

Year 7 – Discover & Explore

Our Careers Programme

Focus: Awareness
Students begin to explore the world of work and understand how school subjects relate to future opportunities.

Key Activities:

  • Introduction to careers and employability
  • Identifying personal strengths and interests
  • First encounters with visiting speakers
  • Curriculum links to real-world jobs
  • Careers assemblies and themed events

Year 8 – Build Knowledge & Skills

Focus: Understanding
Students gain deeper insight into different sectors, pathways, and the skills employers value.

Key Activities:

  • Industry-themed activities and projects
  • Taster sessions and visits (where available)Workshops on personal strengths and goal-setting
  • Encounters with employers and training organisations
  • Introduction to labour-market information

Year 9 – Pathways & Decision-Making

Focus: Making Informed Choices
Students prepare to choose their GCSE/qualification routes and consider how decisions affect future options.

  • In-school Careers Fair
  • Talks from colleges, sixth forms, and training providers
  • Skills development workshops (communication, teamwork, resilience)

Year 10 – Experience & Preparation

Focus: Developing Employability
Students gain hands-on experience and strengthen key skills needed for future applications.

  • Work experience placement
  • Mock interviews with employers
  • CV-building workshops
  • Leadership and enterprise challenges
  • Employer talks and workplace project challenges
  • Visits to further education and training providers
